Bakken Monitor – January 2019

North Dakota's October oil production set a fresh high at 1.392 million b/d (+33,000 b/d m-o-m), below our forecast of 1.412 million b/d (+53,000 b/d). November’s output retreated to 1.376 million b/d (-16,000 b/d), in line with our 1.371 million b/d (-21,000 b/d) forecast, as poor weather hampered completion activity.  Continental Resources is ending the year accelerating away from the pack as North Dakota’s number one oil producer. Former number one Whiting is completing most wells outside of the core. LTO producers appear to be limiting capex increases in response to price weakness at the end of the year, but still targeting firm growth in 2019. Producing within cash flow appears to be the mantra for the larger independents, with both Occidental and Diamondback highlighting dividends as a key priority. Smaller companies appear set to increase capex in cash terms again, however, outstripping the growth of larger competitors, according to research from Barclays....
